The woman was struck at the corner of Dendy Street and The Esplanade, Brighton.

A triple-0 call was made at 2.46pm on Saturday saying a cyclist had been injured in a collision with a car.

She was treated at the scene before being taken to The Alfred hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the car, a 51-year-old Frankston woman, is assisting police with their enquiries. Police expect to charge her with changing lanes when unsafe to do so.

One witness said it looked like the car had initially failed to stop after the accident.

“There was a guy running northbound chasing a car yelling at it telling it to stop. That car pulled over, and as we continued another 20 metres we saw the cyclist on her back in agony.

“It seemed more like [the driver] did not know she’d done it, because once the guy flagged her down she stopped. Once she saw what had happened she ran right over.

“She was actually sitting next to the victim and she was crying.”

Glen Pearsall, the president of Cycling Victoria, said the route was a “mecca” for Melbourne’s cyclists.

“It’s a flat, relatively safe ride and it offers different distances – some people ride from the city down to black rock or Mordialloc or Frankston, or do longer rides right down to the peninsula.”

Safety on the road has been improved in recent years, with cars banned from parking along stretches of it over the weekend to reduce the risk of crashes. Generally, Mr Pearsall said, the route was quite safe for cyclists.

Between 2007 and 2012 there were 216 reported bicycle injuries in the strip, the most of any route in the state in that timeframe, an investigation by Fairfax Media at the time revealed.

The 19-kilometre coastal strip plays host to the notorious ‘Hell Ride’, with tens of thousands of riders zipping along the route each weekend.

Earlier this month a cyclist was taken to hospital with a fractured skull after she collided with other cyclists at high speed while they were racing along the route.
