Charlie Miller was woken up at 4.30am this month by the sound of crackling flames in the living room of their rented home on Power Street, Yeppoon.

Charlie alerted his parents and three siblings, allowing them to escape before the house was consumed in the March 9 blaze.

Lieutenant Rob Cronk from the Yeppoon Fire and Rescue Station, who attended the blaze, praised the boy for remaining calm in a difficult situation.

“He kept a cool head and did the right thing in what must have been a very intense situation,” he said.

“I actually spoke to Charlie at the scene, I asked him who had woken him up and he told me he had heard the noise of the fire, so had woken his family up and got them out,” he said.

Charlie’s actions were inspired by a fire-fighter who visited his school to give students advice on what to do if they saw a fire.

Lieutenant Cronk said this showed the value of educating children on fire safety at a young aged.

“For such a young fellow to think fast under pressure and know what to do, it’s great to see the messages from fire safety visits at school have sunk in and in this case, helped this young boy to save lives,” he said.

A crew of fire-fighters were able to rescue the family dog from the side of the house, and nobody in the family was hurt.

At this time, the cause of the fire is still unknown, though emergency services advised there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

The family lost all but the clothes on their backs to the blaze.

It occurred two weeks after Cyclone Marcia devastated the area, and now the Millers are faced with the prospect of rebuilding their lives from two disasters.

Abby Louis, a friend of the family, set up a fundraiser to help the Millers pay for a bond on a new rental property.

The bond goal is $2000. At this time, the community has raised $1500.
